Wide Shallow garden

My clients’ children had left home, and they wanted to update their garden, as somewhere to relax and entertain, with a softened feel and more interesting planting.  The trampoline was to be removed, plants renovated/renewed with some overgrown shrubs taken down and the paving renewed.

I moved the sunbathing area to the corner, to make the most of the evening sun and possibly provide a dining area, with a pergola for shade.  The lawn would be reshaped and recommendations made for removing selected shrubs. Both these changes made the garden seem less shallow, as the eye had further to travel to reach the point of interest.

In the course of time the shape of the new paving was changed to a more angular one near the house, as the clients wanted to keep the dining area here.  There was new planting throughout the garden and reshaping or removing of overgrown older shrubs, both ably designed and carried out by Cheryl Sibley Garden Solutions.  The ‘borrowed landscape’ of the trees just behind the garden was emphasised by painting the fence dark green to blend in with plants. The new paving was in porcelain, which is very hard-wearing and easy to maintain.  CDS Garden Construction installed this skilfully and devised a more informal path down one side, with gravel and slabs.  There is scope for a water feature near the dining area, which could be installed later.  The clients are very pleased with the overall effect.
