Why the violets appeared

by Jane on April 8, 2010

White violets are everywhere in the lanes and in my garden this year. I haven’t seen them in previous years, and thought we didn’t have any in this area. I’ve just realised why they have suddenly appeared.

I take part in a seed swap from the Cottage Garden Society, and try to grow violets and pansies. I find them hard to grow, as they need long periods outside in frost and snow (or simulated periods in the fridge, in sand) to germinate. So this winter, seeds have germinated that were dormant in the ground, because of all the snow and frost we have had. – Enjoy the violets now, as a reward for all that cold weather!

One really useful book I consult is ‘Seeds: the Ultimate Guide to Growing Successfully from Seed’ by Jekka McVicar’. It covers annuals, perennials, grasses, vegetables, shrubs, trees and palms.  It doesn’t tell you much about growing them but gives you valuable information about how to make them germinate.
