North-facing garden with new sunny patio

My clients had a north-facing garden in Staines, with a conservatory looking out onto a large lawn, some paving near the house and a rarely-used little deck in a corner facing south west. This corner of the garden is an awkward shape, which needed some squaring off to soften it.

My clients wanted to use the garden more for entertaining and relaxing, and to have a sunny patio which was better connected to the area near the house. They wanted to take down some rampant ivy but also screen the garden from neighbouring houses.

I suggested a larger rectangular deck facing south-west with a pergola and trees for screening and privacy. The rectangular shape conceals the pointed boundary, while providing a space to include a compost heap. There is a water feature near the new deck and the deck is connected to the house patio by a path. Planting space has increased and the mature plants will give more privacy and greenery, hiding the fences and softening the sharp lines.
