Mahonia japonica

by Jane on March 14, 2010

I have a Mahonia japonica in my back garden which is flowering now. It smells wonderful. I have just seen the first bumblebee hovering near its creamy-yellow flowers. It’s near my greenhouse so every time I go to pick a few leaves of winter greens I can take a sniff of the mahonia to lift my spirits.

Later in the year the blackbirds and starlings will be darting into the bush to eat the berries.  An excellent shrub for wildlife!

Hi – thanks very much. I appreciate your interest in my site – it’s nice to get some feedback. Are you based in Croatia or Harvard, by the way? My spam filter suspected you are spam! I hope you enjoy gardening in your own country too.
